Since I was eight years old I have loved to
travel, seeing places through the viewfinder
of my camera. It’s easy to create an image
of a place you haven’t seen before, the
excitement can carry you along. I always try
to go a little deeper, to capture something
of the essence or soul of the place. Details, atmosphere, mood.
This almost always involves photographing
the people I encounter, which is why I so
enjoy making portraits. A way to connect,
to gain some real insight into a person, to
share an experience. Brief does not have to
mean shallow. Sometimes it’s easy,
sometimes quite difficult, but the challenge
of making a memorable image from the
encounter is what I love about my work. That enthusiasm also drives my assignments. Being able to get something genuine and real from talent, whether cast from people on the street or professional models, is what I bring
